| Enjoying the Nightlife of Barcelona, Spain |

The second largest city in Spain, Barcelona has everything a traveler could want—history, culture, scenery, and a splendid assortment of nightlife venues. As a major cultural center of Spain, Barcelona is poised on the edge of the sea to greet travelers from around the world and entertain them as few other cities know how. From tapas bars to hidden absinthe houses to cutting edge urban clubs, Barcelona offers a myriad of things to see and do all night long!
All of Barcelona’s various districts and neighborhoods offer something exciting to do in the evening. Most Barcelonans don’t make the club scene until after midnight, so the cafes, bars, restaurants, and even the beaches enjoy exuberant crowds beginning quite early in the evening. Bars typically remain open until 3 in the morning so Barcelona’s nights promise to be long and entertaining in one of the city’s many clubs. The streets of the city are also filled with wonderful live entertainment from DJs to live performances from musicians.
Beach lovers will want to head to the Ciutat Vella District for a visit to the Barceloneta seaside neighborhood. Boasting a terrific boardwalk filled with atmospheric restaurants, bars and clubs, Barceloneta is a convenient place to visit with its own stop on the Metro. Consider a romantic evening at Barceloneta’s Le Kashba, a new club with Moroccan style. Various types of music from jazz to funk make this a memorable venue that is filled with sumptuous Oriental cushions for casual relaxation and a décor that offers unique Barcelonan sophistication.
The El Raval neighborhood, also located in the Ciutat Vella District, is a popular evening destination. The Bar Amirall features exquisite Art Nouveau touches. Barcelona’s Art Nouveau architecture is some of the most famous in the world. Considered one of the city’s loveliest bars, its romantic ambience is the perfect place to bring a date. Genaro is a sophisticated wine bar located near the Boqueria market. Locals hang out to sample the terrific wine menu and eat fresh oysters.
The Barri Gotic, or Gothic Quarter, lies in Barcelona’s old city. Medieval architecture colors the atmosphere of this historic section of Barcelona and some structures even date to the Roman era. The Café Royale is a favorite nighttime destination in this area. The café is frequented by artists, but the establishment has a welcoming aura for anyone in search of a comfortable setting with warm ambience. Similarly, the Arc Café, which is both a bar and restaurant, offers a uniquely comfortable atmosphere that serves as a terrific starting point for a night on the town. For a great tapas bar, head to El Itati, which is an entertaining Basque bar filled with marvelous food to get the evening started.
Gracia is a charming district of Barcelona containing the renowned Teatre Lliure, one of the city’s most important theatres. In the month of August, Gracia holds the Festa Major, an eight day event that is popular with tourists and Barcelonans alike. To enjoy an evening of music and disco, Alfa offers travelers a memorable evening’s entertainment. The Mond Bar, a smaller venue, also provides a hip music scene that is popular with the young. Of course, Barcelona’s warm climate also makes the city squares a popular destination simply to sit with friends and enjoy a bottle of good Spanish wine.
The Eixample district of the city contains a wealth of popular night spots. The elegant Dry Martini is not only considered one of Barcelona’s best cocktail bars, but is often touted as one of the best watering holes in the world. Guardarropia is a bar that’s popular with the city’s fashion industry. People who love to people watch find this establishment an interesting starting point for the evening. One of the hottest nightclubs to enjoy dancing is the famous Buda Barcelona which has been frequented by the likes of actress Penelope Cruz and other Spanish celebrities. Always filled with a beautiful mix of people, this club promises to be the ideal cap on any night.
Of course, half the fun of spending a night in Barcelona is wandering from square to square and enjoying the city’s natural charm. Other venues to consider, however, include: Salsitas (a restaurant and dance club), Sala Razzmatazz (night club), Taberne Les Tapas (a tapas bar), Marsella Bar (bar / Absinthe bar), Espai Barroc (café), Agua de Luna (club), and the Café Paris (café). The rank among Barcelona’s finest or most popular nightlife establishments, but new venues open all the time and the city boasts a myriad of other restaurants, cafes, bars, and clubs that promise excellent entertainment and a memorable taste of Barcelona.
